For one reason or another you develop acne on your skin, it eventually fades away, but you are sometimes left with embarrassing deep scarring that can stay on your face and make you self conscious about your appearance. The first step to treating your acne scars is to know which kind of scarring you have. According to an article on Types of Acne Scars from about.com, there are four common forms of acne scars.

Here is a description of what each type of scar looks like:

  • Ice Pick Scars are deep “holes” in your skin that makes the skin look like it has been pierced by ice picks or a sharp object. They usually extend to the second layer of the skin sometimes making it look like open pores.
  • Boxcar Scars develop under the skin level. The openings to the skin are larger compared to the ice pick scars and they have steep vertical sides.
  • Rolling Scars are scars that appear like waves on the surface of the skin.
  • Hypertrophic or Keloid Scars are hard bumps that are raised above the skin level. The scar is usually bigger than the actual wound.

Acne scars are stubborn and will not go away until you have received the correct treatment depending on the type of acne you have. Now that you have identified the type of scar you have, it is time to take action and get the clear, smooth skin you have always wanted.
